The forest was discovered in 1952 by Maria and Hans-Wilhelm Koepcke. They conducted a series of studies on the Bosque de Zarate, reviewed the environmental division of the western slopes and collected copies of various groups of wildlife that led to the description of a large number of species (Koepcke, HW 1961, Koepcke, M . 1954a, 1954b and 1958, Kraus, 1964, 1955 and 1958). Recognizing the great value made the first proposal to create a conservation unit in this area in 1964 (Koepcke, HW and Koepcke, M. 1964).
My interest in the Bosque de Zarate after the first visit I had opportunity to make in 1977, became the subject of my first studies related to ecology and conservation. These efforts turned in a second proposal for the creation of a conservation unit in the area in 1984 (Franke and Valencia 1984). After the activity of several conservation groups in the area is a great success that the current Support Group Zárate Forest has finally led to the creation of the reserve. Congratulations to them!
As an anecdote connected would like to mention the curious circumstances that have arisen. At the time of my first efforts to study and preserve the Bosque de Zarate, early 80's, Antonio Brack was one of the people which stimulated this work and provided literature when he worked with the General Directorate of Forestry and Wildlife Ministry of Agriculture of those years. I find it a curious coincidence that in his current capacity as Minister of Environment has signed the Ministerial Resolution creating the reserve.
Having failed in the 80 creation of the conservation area, my personal interest in the Bosque de Zarate always remained, and said among other things to collect a series of photographs that compare the state of forests through the years. Several people connected to Drs Koepcke, who visited the accompanying forest, kindly send me pictures that enabled us to gather a "Casi Casi Graphic History Zárate Forest" as it has been called by Mariella Leo, and I want to share with all those who might be interested.
